I don't think playing a violent video game will cause anyone who didn't already have aggressive tendencies to suddenly become violent and start killing people in real life. I'm pretty sure most people can tell the difference between games and reality.
Of course, as with everything, there are always going to be a few exceptions (in this case, some impressionable people who will try to emulate what they did in-game) but I don't think we should say violent games are bad for everybody just because some people can't handle them - they (or people close to them who notice weird behavior changes) are the ones who should realize that those games are messing with their heads and avoid them (or ask for help from loved ones/professionals to stop playing, in case they don't feel like they can solve the problem on their own).

Wow, I took a break from this site for a while and came back to even more of a dumpster fire than I left months ago. I'm deleting my account. Maybe I'll come take a look again some day and make a new one if the site gets better, maybe I won't, who knows. Just felt like leaving a little goodbye note in case anyone still remembers me and wonders why I deleted my account.

I think this has been debunked many times already, I'm not sure why this narrative keeps getting spun when in fact I'd argue that video games have helped keep kids off the streets.
But there is a dark side to gaming and I'd say it leans more to addiction, gambling, and becoming too disconnected from real life, not violence related.

Like ... as a kid/young teen I was burning Sims alive and making graveyards, and thought it was so comical. Also the guys I know that play fps/shooter games are more non-violent/non-confrontational imo than my friends who don't play video games.

The people who do sick things to other's in real life have mental illness, and are infatuated with the idea of receiving notoriety from their crimes. A video game might set an idea off in their head but it wouldn't be the main cause (a book, movie etc could technically do the same thing but it's not as vilified).

I have done some really crazy and terrible things in video games(yes, the Sims were involved, muahaha!) but I would never, EVER even consider attempting to replicate them in real life!
Esuna's post summed up my thoughts pretty perfectly, and I would like to add that for a lot of people, video games are a form of escape and roleplay, and can also be used as a tool to release pent up frustration in a constructive and non-violent(as far as irl is concerned) manner.
I remember that many people wanted to blame Marilyn Manson and his music for Columbine because the shooters listened to him. But Marilyn Manson also plays on the radio, along with a myriad of other artists whose lyrics are arguably more violent and rebellious. Yet the general public exposed to such things doesn't react behind perhaps an eyeroll and to change the station.
What it comes down to is the individual. If their brain is different, if their is illness present and it's not treated, bad things happen. Often, they take their own lives. Othertimes, they begin to torture animals. And sometimes, things escalate. I believe this is called a Pattern of Escalation.

I ran over some sheep in Forza Horizon 4. Havent done that in real life.

Have played Doom, havent shot up a school. (Referencing Doom being the game the Columbine shooters played)

Played Wolfenstein, havent shot any nazis.

Minecraft hasnt made me killing animals with a sword.

Point is, i have played a lot of violent games. Im of sound mind. Most of the time the person is not in a good mental state of mind. The games arent to blame but neither will i put 100% of the blame on the person if they were seriously mentally ill.

While I was playing with Barbie-doll's and pretending to make a family,  I certainly wasn't thinking about running over sheep- and making graveyards of 'Sim's.   I wouldn't even let my real son's play those sort's of game's ether, for one simple reason.
Every seed of aggression,  is one step closer to acing out on very real , Anger.
         I was blessed with an education in Psychology of the growing mind in children, and every little step, is a path to normalization of a 'said' behavior.  I honestly don't expect any of the 'gamer's to understand this because the very nature of gaming has also provided a way to normalize it, by being 'Spawned'  over and over again to try again to better yourself;
at destruction.
   Simplified:   Garbage In=Garbage OUT.
Did the 'Driver' who ran over the Sheep: Have to fix a car and PAY for it, to be able to go to work the next day? [  for example ]  Did they think about  the loss of the Sheep, to farmer's family?

Children who don't learn real coping behavior's will never be able to survive normally in any society.
They will find peer's who share the same values of human life as they do,  and will eventually be a victim or a perpetrator.
It is inevitable.  Every crime  has the debasement of life, as a common element.
Not that any of you could even understand such a concept.
That is something NOT built into a video game, because Empathy cannot be Programmed, into a player.
It can be removed from a human, however by conditioning.  Endless replay of EVIL behavior is very simple to do.

Honestly  I never felt the need to carry a real weapon, until  the first generation of boys solely raised on violent game's became adult's.   Now I fear, being without one.
GAMERS, think they are invincible.  When they really are fooled, by fake programming of the [Mind].

I wish for more optimistic settings in video games. One of best new original sci fi universes ever created is in an role playing video game.

I want a bright future for humanity minus the laser guns!

I have stabbed, shot, decapitated, burnt and blown up people in video games. I have bombed cars, hospitals, schools and all kind of buildings and vehicles. Set fire to anything you can think of. But I would never do those things in real life. In fact I can't even get myself to hit someone back who hits me. I don't think playing violent video games causes violence, when you do violent things inspired by video games then you had those violent tendencies to begin with and they should be addressed. Playing violent video games can actually be a great stress relief. But as soon as you think you can do this things in real life then you need help.
Esuna and Cum_Dumpster already said it all. I couldn't have said it better myself.

I didn't need video games for that. I decapitated my Barbie dolls, just to see what they have inside. I wouldn't blame video games for all evil on the world. On the other hand, the only PC game I plaeyd used to be The Sims, and yes, I had a graveyard next to each house.
