Are we living in a society that promotes Materialism? Am I the only one who thinks that society teaches kids that one's measure of success or happiness is determined by how much stuff we have? It seems like the concept of ' earning what we have' or spending only on things we need is lost. No wonder so much people are in debt, purely because of the mindset of getting what we want when we want it.

This subject is one I think about very often.   Every day in fact.   Obsessed really.
Not so much about acquiring more,  but what the hell do I do with what I already have.

Materialism, is a very interesting subject because it runs the entire line of argument from environment to greed.

I look in stores and I see nothing but waste. People buying new thing's to throw away working old thing's because of a newer model or newest print for a shower curtain would be cute..  Screaming about climate change while surrounding themselves in heaps of shoe's worn once. Or hoarder's home's filled with un-used merchandise bought with credit-card's and bill's never paid. Survival of daily life made possible with disposable material from breakfast to bed. Everything made of material from the environment that was stripped to make that product bought and discarded sooner or later as waste. The hypocrisy of it all sicken's me.

Then you have wealth....   That can be likened to a mental illness.  I am not impressed by fancy cars when used as show ponies.  Everything should really serve a purpose.  There is a point when you have enough money. Going past that point and needing to buy ridiculously useless 'stuff' because you can, is when it becomes insanity.

I reached that point and then some.  Now I look around my home and laugh at myself at some of the silly shit I can't bare to part with.  My own children don't know the value of a silly million year old fossil i have sitting on an obscure shelf. I bought it because it looks awesome and it is fun to connect to something that was alive so long ago. I let visitor's hold it too.  Many never even seeing something like that much less getting to touch something very rarely seen outside of a museum.  Trinket's galore, that have value to history in more way's than one I have scattered in 3 room's.  I've got to much material and now it is what vexes me. What to do with it all, I have no interest in cataloging my trophies.
I sometimes worry what will end up in a landfill upon my death.  What will be lost to history at that time in a landfill.   [Mother-Natures tax's]
It wont be the gold. Yet gold and the mining of it is devastating to the environment, and as common as any ore in the earth.
I am not impressed by movie stars getting off private aircraft, ranting about the environment ether. Who are they trying to impress with display's of materialism?

There is a balancing point though.  There is nothing wrong with looking successful.  New style's and update's need to happen.  Only the individual knows for sure when they are beginning to 'show-off' using materialism.
[Did you buy that new 6000 USD dress because the 5000 USD cocktail dress in your closet didn't fit anymore?]

I think simple things like rewearing your outfits, realising that you don't need the iPhone 7 because your iPhone 6 is still in good working condition or donating the extra clothes you have in your closet, not wasting food etc will go a long way. They are so much people out there naked or dressed in rags and hungry, we could do so much more with our income; like helping them.

Materialism is what runs society these days. Consumer culture wouldn't exist without it, and without that, a downfall of the economy would be inevitable. It's a shame this attitude is so embedded in our culture, as it is something that would be difficult to get rid of.

Of course we need to consume and purchase but not so wasteful and thoughtlessly. It irritates me to see people with so much more than they actually need.

me too.  @^
I live where movie stars have summer home's.  What do you think I see all summer?
An endless parade of recreational motor vehicles. Toy's they use maybe once a year.  it is totally common to see truck's towing 3 trailer's. one mobile home, one trailer of 6 all terrain vehicles, and one trailer with a boat.

I know a man with 4 airplane's.  4 aircraft and 1 pilot seriously.  Can you even imagine how much it cost's just to maintain them, let alone fly them.  I can understand it being his hobby, but isn't that leaning towards the materialistic side?  In his hangar, there is also a boat, and a 40 foot mobile home.
Used only once a year if ever.  Sure he has the money to spend,  but it still just look like a total waste of money and space to me. His hanger at the airport is twice the size of my entire home.  At least he is not obnoxious about his wealth  and is a really decent individual.  It must be a 'man's thing' to collect all the toy's possible.

Women collect clothes to ridiculous levels too.
However, my example is about a local male rap-artist. His collection of hat's and shoe's is totally insane and materialistic. He purposely only wear's them ONCE, and then they go into his walk-in room he uses as a closet.  He is by far the best dressed man I've ever met, but what's the deal with the many thousand's of hat's and shoes and sport's apparel?  He is truly a wicked person to go shopping with. [ i mean that in a good way, because of his style and personality. Sales women give him very special treatment and attention. haha ]  His closet is like a bank vault. At 200 USD for a single pair of sneaker's, and 30 USD for a hat, he has 10's of thousand's of dollar's worth just collecting dust.  You should have seen his face when after owing me a favor for getting him out of jail, I went into his closet, and took a hat and put it on.  He was nearly in tear's at the loss of a single hat in a sea of them.

(the rest of the story)
Getting out of jail was worth it to him, in the end.  30 dollar's was a very cheap fee for services rendered.  My flirting, caused the fight that landed him in jail in the first place.
My bad.  He didn't like it when another man grabbed my ass while leaning over a pool table in a short skirt to take my shot.  OK,  I was playing it up, just for him on our date but other drunk men couldn't take their eye's off of me. It began to irritate him very badly because he is very protective of me and heard some distasteful comment's in the men's room.  It boiled over into a fight when I was actually grabbed by one of them. He came to my rescue and was the one left standing when the police arrived.  The case was dismissed against him. The drunk didn't do as well because sexual assault is a major crime.

It is a shame that we are so wasteful as a society. But, materialism can be fun though, right? Case in point: shoes!

Absolutely.  But that is capitalism.  It is on parents to get that out of their kids....unfortunately they often are the worst culprits for making things worse

Make your parents proud, your enemies jealous, and yourself happy.  The only thing that can prevent you is you!
